It can be extremely tricky to clean your cat’s teeth. A cat typically will not let you just brush his/her teeth. So what can you do? Get them used to it by slowly introducing them to having it done.
One easy thing you do a grooming sessions at the same time every night. Start your night off by brushing the cat’s hair first. Be gentle and get them used to being brushed. The will allow you to easy into the teeth brushing.
Next, get your cat to lay down and get them relaxed. Brush the cat for another few minutes and then break out the tooth brush. Slowly pet the cat near the chin and mouth area and then slowly move the brush up to the cat’s teeth. Start off slow as the cat will probably not like it at all. Make sure you gently hold the cat in place while you start brushing. If the cat is moving to much you may have to grab the fur firmly (not rough) on the back of the cat’s neck while you are brushing.
Brush the cat’s teeth with soft even strokes. It will only take a minute or 2 to fully brush the cat’s teeth. Don’t be too forceful or you will scare the cat and he/she will never let you brush their teeth. If your cat is very active it may be impossible to brush the cat’s teeth on your own with no help. In this situation a second person may be required.
Don’t worry if you can’t brush the cat’s teeth every single night. To help keep your cats teeth clean you might also decide to give them cat treats that offer a whitening and protection.
