Preventing Eating Disorders To Lead A Healthy Life

Much has been written about eating disorders in various print media. This problem mainly afflicts the younger generation these days. You have to find ways of preventing eating disorders among children as it can lead to death also if left unattended. The younger generation including children is largely influenced by the media in their eating habits. The mental development of you or your child gets distorted because of the advertisements that project models with lean bodies as being very attractive to youngsters. The television is used as a babysitter in most of the homes in front of which children spend a lot of time everyday. As children can be quite impressionable the advertisements set a bad example and hence parents have to see that their children do not get carried away by what is said in these advertisements to prevent eating disorders from an early age.

Most importantly, the problem needs to be a publicly noted among high school and college. Alternatively, there are more efficient ways to lose weight without starving oneself. Peer pressure while in school can also lead to eating disorders. He or she may be teased about his or her appearance. Low self esteem in children may also cause them to starve or develop bulimia.

Nowadays one out of seven college-aged females has a problem with bulimia, and one out of a hundred has a problem with anorexia. As eating disorders are deep rooted at a psychological level such sufferers need psychotherapy too. Left untreated, their eating disorders can escalate out of control. One out of every ten people with an eating disorder eventually die due to the damage caused to the body.

Preventing eating disorder is easy with the media playing a more responsible role. Blaming the media alone will not work, proactive measures have to be undertaken to prevent our future generations from hurting themselves through eating disorders.
